How to reach Willesley. Willesley Wood is 2.5 miles
from Ashby on the Donisthorpe road and half a mile from Donisthorpe. From
Ashby town centre take the road towards Measham and turn right before Willesley
Park Golf Course. Turn left at the first cross roads (1.5 miles) and park
near the first gate on the right. Alternatively continue past the crossroads
for a quarter of a mile to the entrance of Oakthorpe Colliery Picnic Site
(signposted) which is run by Leicestershire County Council and provides
a surfaced Car Park which is open dawn until dusk.
Original Site Map. The letters A, B, C etc in the green compartments are for planning and management. Each compartment is planted with specific species of trees according to situation. The open spaces between compartments are called "rides" and are planned out to provide walks with regular viewpoints of the surrounding area and special features. They appear wide at first but this is necessary as the canopy provided by the growing trees will quickly shade them over, making them appear much narrower.
